Music and dance extravaganza Stomp will celebrate its 20th birthday this autumn with a Birthday Gala Special at its current West End home, the Ambassadors Theatre, where it has been playing since 2007. The show officially premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1991 before going on to enjoy global success in the US, Europe and South America, as well as the UK. Stomp Co-creator Luke Cresswell will be joined on stage at the Ambassadors on Monday 14th November 2011 by several friends from the world of comedy who will take part in a specially choreographed routine as part of the birthday celebrations. |
A Street Dance Sensation for Two Decades
Stomp began life in Brighton in the summer of 1991 with the genesis for the show springing from the many years of collaboration between its creators, Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. The two men first worked together in the early 1980s as members of the street band Pookiesnackenburger and the theatre group Cliff Hanger. They began creating percussive set-pieces, including a memorable ’Bins’ commercial for Heineken Lager which was the inspiration for Stomp’s climactic dustbin dance. |

Stomp became an overnight sensation after premiering at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh in 1991, winning the Daily Express Best of the Fringe Award. It went on to enjoy fantastic success on an international tour, culminating in a sold-out season at London’s Sadler’s Wells in January 1994. Although a Broadway production opened that year, the West End had to wait until 2002 for Stomp to make its debut. The show premiered at the Vaudeville Theatre, where it ran for five years. A new version, with updated music and routines, was launched in 2009, refreshing Stomp’s appeal as it enters its third decade of noise-making mayhem. |
