Will Lloyd Webber Search for a New Superstar?

Theatre impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber could be about to launch a new TV talent search to find an actor to star in an arena production of his famous rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, according to entertainment industry gossip. However, after several successful shows on the BBC, Lord Lloyd Webber is rumoured to be taking his new programme to ITV in order to work with its chief Peter Fincham (the former BBC1 controller). The new series would follow a similar format to How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, Any Dream Will Do and I’d Do Anything and see Lloyd Webber sitting on a judging panel, with the show seeking to cast both a Jesus and Judas for the new tour. |
Creative Duo with Heaven on Their MindsAndrew Lloyd Webber wrote the musical numbers for the classic rock opera in collaboration with lyricist Tim Rice. The idea began life as a concept album dramatising the last week of the life of Jesus, before evolving into a full blown Broadway musical in 1971. The show begins with Judas worrying about the growing popularity of Jesus and the likely punishment from the Roman Empire if more Jews rally to his teachings. It ends with the crucifixion of Jesus after Judas’s betrayal, where Pontius Pilate washes his hands of the death sentence and Jesus accepts his fate as God’s divine plan. The last UK tour was seen in 2004/05 with Glenn Carter in the role as 'Jesus' and pop singer James Fox as 'Judas'. |
