History:
The Royal Opera House was opened in May 1858 with a performance of Meyerbeer’s Les Huguenots. After more than a century of performances the venue was becoming inadequate for the demands of the Royal Opera, so an extensive redevelopment plan was agreed in the 1980s. Building work finally began in 1996 after a grant from the National Lottery. The transformed Opera House reopened in 1999 at a total cost of £178m. The existing auditorium and foyers were fully refurbished, and the spectacular Floral Hall rebuilt and turned into a wonderful public space with bars and eating areas.
