History:

The Old Vic was originally opened as the Royal Coburg Theatre in 1818 in honour of the venue's regal patrons Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. It was renamed the Royal Victorian Theatre in 1833 after the heir to the throne Princess Victoria. The National Theatre were resident at the Old Vic until the construction of their own venue on the South Bank in the mid-1970s. Hollywood star Kevin Spacey became artistic director in 2003.
