Synopsis: It is 1979 and Esme Allen has it all. A successful actress, she is at the pinnacle of her career and passionate about the West End stage where she earns a comfortable living. A visit from her daughter, Amy, with a new boyfriend, a brash young gossip-columnist and film critic, sets in motion a series of events which reach their shattering conclusion sixteen years later.

What the critics had to say.....
NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Blanched, physically reduced and emotionally shattered, [Felicity] Kendal's Esme proclaims a defiant stoicism, with theatre her escapist art and inspiration. Amy's View takes on fresh life." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Some plays shrink with time: others grow. And, nine years after its National Theatre premiere, David Hare's play has matured well. That's partly because, in Peter Hall's expert revival, it seems a less sentimental paean to theatre than it once did, and partly because its marriage of family drama and state-of-the-nation commentary emerges more clearly...Felicity Kendal is excellent" BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Those who still think of [Felicity] Kendal as the pert chipmunk of yesteryear will be as surprised by her strong, doughty performance." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Handsomely revived...I found myself both enthralled and moved...intelligent, deeply felt drama." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Felicity Kendal is wonderfully witty and moving as Esme."
